Program Highlights

The Prime Minister's Awards for Excellence in Early Childhood Education honour outstanding educators who, through their dedication and skill, are giving children an important head start that helps them succeed at school.

Awards

The Awards, offered at the Certificate of Excellence (national) and Certificate of Achievement (regional) levels, carry cash prizes of $5,000 and $1,000 respectively.

Certificates of Excellence are awarded to the 5 top-ranked nominees. Up to 10 of the next top ranked nominees each receive a Certificate of Achievement, with at least one award (Excellence or Achievement) designated for each of the following regions: British Columbia; the Prairies; the North (Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut); Ontario; Quebec; and Atlantic Canada. In addition, at least one Certificate of Excellence and one Certificate of Achievement is awarded to the top-ranked Aboriginal early childhood educator.

Recipients receive program pins, as well as letters and certificates signed by the Prime Minister.

Awards Ceremony

Recipients are recognized at events in their communities organized by their early childhood education setting/place of work. Cabinet ministers or members of Parliament are invited to participate in these local events.

Selection Committee

Award recipients are selected by a committee of early childhood education and care practitioners and stakeholders from across Canada.
