Teaching approach:

  • Students must be more than taught effectively; they must take ownership of their learning. For example, students develop self-confidence and responsibility by planning, developing and staging performances together.
  • Students develop musicianship, literacy skills, and musical and theoretical understanding through choral performance. The greatest achievement comes from the transformation from the academic and theoretical into practice and performance.

Outstanding achievements:

Mr. Goulding increased choir participation from 11 students to more than 200 in one year. In a school with 951 students, 21 percent are in the choir.

Mr. Goulding's students have high grades with a very low failure rate in his classes.

Students in Mr. Goulding's classes, which emphasize teamwork, collaboration and peer mentoring, benefit from significant improvements in communication, decision-making, problem-solving and organizational skills.

The Mount Pearl Show Choir features singers and dancers and is very involved in the musical heritage of Newfoundland and Labrador. The choir performed as part of the Provincial Soiree '99 Celebration Tour and the Viking 1000: Celebrate the Journey Tour. The choir also achieved an outstanding level of excellence at international competitions in New York, the Bahamas and Florida.

Rave reviews:

There was a choir rehearsal and it opened my eyes to a whole new world. I had been a very shy person, terrified of being the centre of attention; having to give a simple speech in class would send me into an asthma attack. Being in [the choir] and spending time with Carl Goulding gave me courage to do things not possible for a person like me. Former student

I was asked at university to write an essay describing the qualities that make a great teacher. I simply used Carl Goulding as a model. Former student
