Teaching approach:

  • Emphasize self-reliance, responsibility and community involvement. Insist on mutual support and respect in the class and demonstrate it through volunteer activities.
  • Make extensive use of new technology and teach students the skills.
  • Create projects that feed into students' interests.

Outstanding achievements:

Student projects have attracted attention both in Canada and internationally.

  • A project on Canada's federal elections received a Heritage Canada grant.
  • The students created numerous science projects, including a robot and a computer made of recycled computer parts, that were presented at the Bell Regional Science Fair and covered in the media; in 2002, a team of his students won first prize.
  • Students prepared and delivered a presentation to the school board in favour of creating an intensive English-language course at the school; the board approved the course.
  • Mr. Roy contacted a school in France, which led to an exchange program. Mr. Roy and his students hosted their French friends in October and will visit France this June.

Mr. Roy develops social responsibility in students, who regularly help peers having difficulties at school and also run an annual program for younger students to write letters to Santa Claus.

In 1998-1999, Mr. Roy's class was the only elementary class among the winners of the nation-wide CANARIE Internet Scavenger Hunt.

Mr. Roy received a special award in 2000 from an association of Quebec teachers (AQUOPS) for his efforts to use computers in the classroom.

Rave reviews:

Sans aucun doute, il démontre une confiance et une droiture qui font que des enfants en adaptation scolaire se sentent en sécurité et bien compris par un tel enseignant. Fellow teacher
