Important for children to become self-directed learners and problem-solvers, both inside and outside the classroom.
Gives children the confidence and ability to set and achieve their goals.
To encourage students to be independent, Mrs. Varghese lets students establish rules for a safe and fun learning environment. The rules, which include working together to solve problems, are used to create a "class behaviour code," which the class follows throughout the year.
She also helps students take initiative and make decisions. For instance, she encourages children to choose their own activities and projects, based on their interests. The children also learn to resolve conflicts and to be more sensitive to the feelings of others.
She also initiated a playground leaders' program, in which senior students are trained to resolve disputes in the schoolyard.
Mrs. Varghese also keeps the lines of communication open with parents. After the first day of class, she calls parents, and encourages them to participate and keep in touch. She also organizes regular open houses for parents and distributes a monthly newsletter.
