Teaching approachIt’s all about options for Yvonne Dawe’s students. While students are encouraged to choose a science fair project, they can also work as a lab technician, teach a science class to their peers, or work as a tutor. Students have designed science pages for the school website and produced short science filMs. As the Louis Pasteur quote above the SMART board in her classroom reads: “Discovery favors the prepared mind.” Ms. Dawe’s students leave her class creative problem-solvers, ready to take on the world.
- Ms. Dawe has increased student participation in science fairs over the past five years by collaborating with other science teachers and implementing incentives. Students have succeeded at the school, regional and provincial levels with some even continuing on to compete at the national level. Ms. Dawe has sat on the board for the Eastern Newfoundland Science Fairs Council for about ten years and also volunteers her time with the Canada Wide Science Fair.
- Ms. Dawe enhances the organic chemistry “experience” through a set of 3D glasses that she was able to acquire so that students can better view lessons designed on Chemsketch software.
- As the teacher sponsor of the Youth Action Committee (YAC), Ms. Dawe has inspired students to broaden the scope of their interests to include local and environmental issues and initiatives. The group has collected Christmas stockings with toiletries for young homeless people and started implementing hydration stations around the school to eliminate plastic bottle consumption. Since 2009, YAC membership grew from 25 to 44.
"Ms. Dawe] is one of the most influential people I have ever met. (…) She makes the class fun and interesting; there was never a boring chemistry class. Because of her, I want to pursue chemistry in my post secondary education. She made chemistry come alive for her students and I think that’s what people love most about her."
"Ms. Dawe is an outstanding teacher and has been a major influence on many lives throughout her teaching career. Even though I graduated high school four years ago I still keep in touch with her on a regular basis."
